Transforming our master bedroom Bedroom transformation with added wood panelling above the bed and bold geometric bedding in a colour palette of soft, warm neutrals

Transforming our master bedroom into a space I’m proud of

Why, as an interior designer, do I find designing my own home so challenging?

As an interior designer, you might assume that designing my own home would be straightforward. Yet, contrary to how easy I’m able to guide my clients through styling decisions, approaching my own space feels like an entirely different game.

Our master bedroom has been my nemesis.

I’ve never been entirely happy with how the room has looked; despite being a minimalist this room always felt too clinical, lacking warmth and personality.

Until now, where I’ve transformed our master bedroom into a space I’m really proud of.

Bedroom transformation: before

During our previous bedroom makeover, we transformed the space entirely, from the colour of the walls to all the furniture and decor. This time however, I wanted to work with the existing furniture and focus on refreshing the rooms overall aesthetic; an added bonus, having a tin of Rubine Ashes paint from Little Greene leftover from a previous project which was the perfect tone to replace the previous Farrow and Ball colour.

To begin, I created a mood board, that showcased the existing items I wanted to keep, alongside several new pieces I intended to purchase.

Mood board creation

It’s quite fascinating, for clients projects I create a collection of mood boards as second nature, however rarely do I arrange the same for my own home.

The most significant change has been the installation of wood panelling, which creates a stunning focal point. Additionally, we’ve incorporated LED strips that casts a soothing glow, creating an ideal ambience for unwinding before bed.

Next week, I’ll be sharing more on how we installed the wall panelling exclusively available on my Substack account, so as not to miss out you may want to consider subscribing where the post will be delivered direct to your inbox.

I decided to update the mirror positioned in the space above the chest of drawers, as the previous mirror with its “porthole” design, was too imposing for this room, and whilst I still appreciate its design (now being re-homed in the guest bedroom), it wasn’t quite right for this particular space.

The new mirror purchase with it’s sleek and contemporary design, perfectly encapsulates the clean, modern look I was after.

The final finishing touches to he bedroom was adding a fresh new bedding set and a bespoke light pendant handcrafted by a local artisan.

The light pendant, crafted from stunning herringbone-patterned grey wood veneer, is beautifully complemented by a luxurious copper lining.

Lastly, my favourite find; this gorgeous bed set from M&S.

I wanted a bedding set which would enhance the new decor and fell in love with this modern, geometric design. The colours work so beautifully with the rest of the bedroom palette, transforming our master bedroom into a space I really enjoy spending time in and I’m also really proud of.
