One of the most common questions I’m asked is how to maximise the space you have in your home.
There are a number of relatively simple steps that you can follow to create the illusion of more space in your home.
Furniture choices:
Try not to use oversized pieces of furniture, ideally you want to focus on one or two statement pieces in a room; choose furniture that is raised off the floor and when you next think about purchasing a new sofa, consider one with built in storage which is a great way to hide any clutter!
Top Tip: Adding a rug helps zone a space, although avoid using a rug that is too small as it will make the room feel cramped; choosing a rug that is larger than you biggest piece of furniture such as your sofa and positioning it underneath will define your seating area as well as creating a sense of space at the same time.

Placement of furniture is also key in a small room, don’t feel you have to position everything against a wall, having the sofa pulled away from the wall will make the room feel bigger.
Create the illusion of more space:
Mirrors are one of the easiest options to create the illusion of more space in a small room.
You can hang a large mirror opposite a window or use multiple mirrors on a wall which will maximise the amount of light you allow into the room, creating the effect of a room being larger than it is.

Think about your paint and wallpaper choices:
Using subtle tone variations of the same colour can make your room feel more spacious.
The image below from Little Greene is a lovely example of using two similar tones in one space, which works very effectively.

Or you may decide to choose a vertically patterned wallpaper to create the illusion of more height.

Top Tip: If wallpaper isn’t your thing consider artwork that draws the eye towards the ceiling, this is great for rooms with a low ceiling.
I just love the living room of @northwoodsupply. It’s is an incredible example of making the most out of a small space, following so many of the suggestions I’ve shared, including artwork that draws the eye vertically, use of taller lamps and mixing and matching both pattern and colour with their choice of accessories.

Ways to maximise storage:
Consider adding a floor to ceiling bookcase, this is a great option, especially if you can position within an alcove to really maximise space in a small room.
Top Tip: Think about your door choices for built in cupboards, there are lots of interesting options available including sliding doors, which is really beneficial if space is really tight, wood panelled options or even coloured glass to create something more interesting!
You can even consider slab-fronted drawers, rather than standard doors, which will maximise storage space, whilst still maintaining a modern, minimalist look.

Accessorise your home:
If you’re opting for a neutral colour for the walls, such as an off-white or stone tone, which will make the room feel light, open and airy; a great way to add some interest is through home furnishings by mixing and matching textures, patterns and colour.
